Since the X6 gets an outstanding 4.8 rating from 8 users (a much more reliable user rating than the X5, the X6 gets the best user-rating of any scratch mixer), and since it offers more functions for less money, it is a better buy than the X5 (for most DJs).

The Numark M6 USB has 4 input channels, each with gain, three-band EQ, and LED metering, USB computer connection for playing and recording with Mac or PC enabling you to play music from music-player software and record your mix to your computer. Pros.

The Numark M6 USB is said by users to be good in use, solid, sturdy, and it does a good job.

Cons.

One of the customer complaints was that the M6 USB is NOT a MIDI-controller for DJ software. While you can play audio from the computer into the mixer, and record audio from the mixer into the computer, users say that you cannot use it to control DJ software on a computer. Having said that, the product decription does not indicate that it is a MIDI-controller, and only says that it can play and record audio to and from the computer, so strictly speaking the product description is not misleading, and any misunderstandings are on the part of the buyer.

One user said that the sound is “unnatural” and the controls (such as EQ) are not suitable for a typical DJ.

Alternatives to the Numark M6 USB

The Alternatives to the Numark M6 USB include the best-rated Behringer DDM4000 DJ Mixer (see our product report on that), which is around twice the price of the M6, but has lots more userful features including BPM-synced sampling, BPM counters, fader curves, kill switches, lots of BPM-synchronized effects, and an outstanding 4.7 user rating. Another big plus is the fact that it is a MIDI-controller for most DJ software (unlike the M6, which isn’t a MIDI controller).

The Numark C3USB Five-Channel Mobile DJ Rack Mixer with USB I/O is slightly more expensive than the M6, but gets a better user rating from more users. It’s specifications look similar to the M6.

If you want to scratch, the Numark M2 Professional Scratch Mixer might be a better choice, as it’s a lot cheaper and has a quicker scratch-type cross-fader setting. However, it’s a 2-channel mixer (as compared to the 4 channels of the M6), and doesn’t have USB in/out (although it’s easy and cheap enough to get a well-rated USB audio device for your computer, which will do the same job).

For something even cheaper than the M2, the Gemini PS121x Professional 2 Channel Stereo Mixer is well-rated as a simple 2-channel DJ mixer, or for only slightly more money, the Behringer VMX100 2-Channel DJ Mixer with Beat Counter adds the useful feature of a BPM counter and is also well-rated.

Turntables

One of the best rated turntables is the Stanton T92USB USB Direct Drive DJ Turntable, which gets an excellent 4.5 user rating from 10 user reviews (at the time of writing). A much cheaper option is the ION Audio Profile Pro USB DJ Turntable, which gets a good 4.2 user rating by 11 user reviews and can be used directly with a computer, as well a being a normal vinyl turntable (although not really designed for scratching)..

CD decks

Very well-rated, but more expensive DJ CD decks include the Denon DNS1200 USB DJ CD Player which gets a very good 4.2 user rating by 6 users and includes 4 effects, 3 platter effects, key adjustment, USB connection, and MIDI control of DJ software. The slightly cheaper (at the time of writing) Pioneer CDJ-200 Pro Cd/Mp3 Player gets a very good 4.0 user rating from 6 users, and has 3 jog-wheel controlled effects. For a cheaper but well-rated CD deck, consider the Stanton S252 DJ Table-Top CD Player with Fader Start and Digital Outputs, which gets three 5-star user ratings.

Numark M2 Features . . . it’s so compact that it fits into any 10-inch mixer case, and it includes all the essentials for you to scratch away in style. 3-band EQ on each channel, crossfader-reverse and slope controls, and mic input (with its own EQ). It’s a basic mixer, but does everything you need for scratching or standard DJing.

One of the customer complaints was that the wrong photo was shown, but that’s not the case currently on Amazon. Someone else said that they would have liked more cross-fader options than the fast or slow provided, but as many users said, it’s great value for the price and does the job well. If you want more features, then that’s fine, but you have to pay more money (see below for other DJ mixer alternatives).

Alternatives to the Numark M2 Professional Scratch Mixer include the Numark M4 Three-Channel Scratch Mixer for those wanting the extra channel and which is also very highly recommended by users, or the cheaper Numark M1 Compact Two-Channel Scratch Mixer which is more basic (for example it lacks the level metering the M2 has). There is also the Numark M1USB Compact Scratch Mixer with USB Audio I/O for those wanting digital connection to computers etc.

While there are excellent DJ mixers from quality brands such as, Behringer, Santon, or Pioneer, Numark is the only recommended brand that does a dedicated scratch mixer at this price-level. From the user comments, it’s probably not a good idea to buy a DJ mixer by one of the lesser-known brands, as there are significant user complaints on many of them and we won’t recommend them here. Numark gets great user comments on their whole range of professional DJ equipment.

Don’t forget that you might need headphones, and the Behringer HPX2000 High-Definition DJ Headphones are suitable to go with the M2. You might also need a turtable or two, a dj wireless microphone, and a DJ case, all available from Amazon.

The Behringer DDM4000 DJ Mixer is a 32-bit digital DJ mixer with beat-synchronized sampler, 4 multi-FX sections, 2 high-precision BPM counters, digital crossfader and MIDI out which allows the unit to act as a controller for many DJ softwares. It has 4 Phono/Line stereo channels allowing up to 8 sources to be connected simultaneously, 2 XLR Microphone inputs with Gain, EQ, Talk function and their own FX, and 4 stereo channels with programmable parametric 3-band EQ and Kill function, and fader curve control.

The BPM-sync’d multi-effects section includes two effects engines with a sampler with beat-controlled loop function, real-time pitch control, sampler FX and crossfader start option.

Don’t forget that if you need turntables to go with your mixer, the Denon DJ Turntable Media Player And Controller is particularly well recommend by users. If you need headphones, the Sony MDR-V700DJ DJ-Style Monitor Series Headphones goes well with the Behringer mixer, and is extremely well regarded by users. Amazon also sells the other little extras you might need like USB MIDI cables etc.

One of the customer complaints was that Behringer seem to have spent all the money on the quality of the workings, so the knobs and buttons are only “medium” quality. Somene else said that it does take some time to get to know, because it has so many features available. Some earlier users commented that the EQ’s have a bit of a “zero” spot in the middle, but later users say that this doesn’t seem to be that way any more, so maybe the product has been updated. One customer said that some older units can have very bright LED’s.

The only general comment that several users said, was that before buying this unit they were a bit scared by the Bheringer name because many years ago they made some questionable products, but when they’d bought one they had nothing but praise for this model. Looking at user comments on a range of current Behringer products, they have many products available, and users rate them all highly, many with 5 stars of user rating on Amazon.

Alternatives to the Behringer DDM4000 are many, and include the Pioneer DJM-400 Pro Dj Mixer which is a well-known model, but has only 2 channels and significantly more expensive than the Behringer, and gets slightly less great user reviews. There is also the Numark DXM09 Digital Scratch DJ Mixer which has 3 channels, but gets great user reviews and is also cheaper than the Behringer, so if you do a lot of scratching, that might be a better choice for your needs.

Additional alternatives include the Vestax Pmc-280 Pro 4 Channel 16 Effects Dj Mixer also got a good review from one user on Amazon, and is said by some to have a more “old skool” feel, which will appeal to some people. The Behringer DX2000USB DJ Mixer is aimed at the DJ/producer, with 7 channels and audio/MIDI editing software. It’s cheaper than the DDM4000 but doesn’t have effects, so it’s suited to a different kind of DJ than the DDM4000.

In summary, the Behringer DDM4000 gets a full 5-star rating from users on Amazon, and more features and quality for the price than anything comparable. Users are very happy with this model, and there are no significant complaints at all.
