Cons.

One of the customer complaints was that Numark X5 is

Minor complaints included the height of the X5 which is significantly lower than most DJ equipment (although perfect for the V7′s), no fader start on the mixer (even though the V7′s have fader start), and that the mixer has no FX send/return loop (see the X6 below, which has built-in effects).

Numark X5 Two-Channel, 24-Bit Digital DJ Mixer in use

The X5 is said to be easy to use and built well.

One reviewer said “This mixer definitely had a better sound than other mixers on the market at similar or higher price-points.” Another reviewer said “You can get some nice-sounding sweeps out of the EQs . . . {snip} . . . I could not get the outputs to clip no matter what I tried.

The X5 is great for scratching, in the words of one reviewer:- “The faders feel like they have very little or no resistance in them making it easy to pull off the strenuous fast-cut combinations necessary in today’s turntablist environment . . . {snip} . . . The cut-in time was VERY small even when compared to other Professional Scratch mixers. The cut-in travel distance was about 1mm making it simple to do advanced crab and transformer scratches.

Alternatives to the Numark X5 Two-Channel, 24-Bit Digital DJ Mixer

The Alternatives to the Numark X5 Two-Channel, 24-Bit Digital DJ Mixer include the Numark X6 Digital Scratch Mixer with Effects (see our product report on that), which has the advantage of effects and kill switches and a cheaper price than the X5 (at the time of writing), but one user says the faders on the X6 are less good, so he suggested replacing the X6 fader with the one used in the X5, for the best of both worlds. Since the X6 gets an outstanding 4.8 rating from 8 users (a much more reliable user rating than the X5, the X6 gets the best user-rating of any scratch mixer), and since it offers more functions for less money, it is a better buy than the X5 (for most DJs).

The Numark X9 Three-Channel Digital Scratch Mixer With Effects has 12 digital effects, mini-crossfader cueing, kill switches, is about 1/3 more expensive than the X5, and gets very good ratings from 2 users. The Numark X7 digital DJ mixer, which adds MIDI-control of software for even more perfect integration with V7′s and software. (price unavailable at the time of writing).

One of the best-rated DJ mixers is the Behringer DDM4000 DJ Mixer (see our product report on that), which has sampler, effects, replacable crossfader and can be used for MIDI control, all for little more than the price of the X6.

There are plenty of cheaper scratch mixers available, with the Numark M1 Compact Two-Channel Scratch Mixer being the cheapest Numark model at the time of writing. The Numark M2 Professional Scratch Mixer is only slightly more expensive, and gets a 4.1 user rating from 7 user reiews.

The Accessories for the Numark X5 Two-Channel, 24-Bit Digital DJ Mixer include one or two of the very well-rated Numark V7 Motorized Turntable Software Controller’s (see our product report on that for ratings, alternatives etc.)

You might also need DJ headphones, such as the Behringer HPX2000 Headphones High-Definition DJ Headphones, and a PA system to play it through.

You might also want a dynamic microphone (the X5 has a mic input). The NADY SP-4C Dynamic Microphone is a low-cost microphone which comes with a 1/4 inch cable, and gets a 4.0 user rating overall from 70 user reviews, although get a minority of user reviews saying that it is unreliable, so if you want something better rated, pay a bit more for the Behringer XM8500 Dynamic Microphone, Cardioid, which gets an excellent 4.7 overall user rating (with no negative reviews at all), plus a suitable mic cable such as the Pyle-Pro PPMJL15 Professional Microphone Cable (1/4” Male to XLR Female, 15 ft.).
